Why Are Flights to Las Vegas So Expensive? (Weekend by Weekend)

Every Friday, thousands of people stare at a fare to Las Vegas that makes no sense. The same seat, on the same airline, on the same route, costs double what it cost two weekends earlier. It is not random, and it is not a glitch. Las Vegas flight prices run on a calendar: the city's conventions, fights, races, festivals and holidays, stacked on top of the strongest weekend travel pattern in American leisure flying. This page is that calendar, weekend by weekend, with the cause named for every single one.

The stakes are real. Las Vegas fares rose more than 20 percent in the first four months of 2026 alone, well ahead of the national average, according to Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority figures. Friday departures on U.S. leisure routes run about 18 percent above Tuesday departures in federal fare data. Put the two together, a Friday flight on a big event weekend, and you are looking at the most expensive domestic seat of the year.

The short answer

• Flying out Friday and home Sunday is the most expensive pattern there is. Shift either leg to Tuesday, Wednesday or Monday and the same trip usually drops by a quarter or more.
• Events set the ceiling. A 50,000-person convention, the Grand Prix, Super Bowl weekend or New Year's Eve can double or triple fares on the routes that feed them.
• The dead zones are your friend. Mid-December, late January and mid-August weekends rate Low on this calendar almost every year, because nothing is in town and it is either freezing by Vegas standards or 110 degrees.
• Book the hotel when you book the flight. Room rates follow flight prices up on event weekends, only slower. The calendar's second move on every weekend exists because the hotel is where the real money difference is.

Mid-December (after the rodeo leaves and before Christmas travel starts), late January after the big conventions, and the August slump are the three softest fare windows of the year. How far ahead should I book a flight to Las Vegas?

For most routes, two to five weeks out is the sweet spot the route data supports: booking about five weeks ahead on Los Angeles to Las Vegas saved roughly half versus last-minute prices in Kayak's route data, checked October 2026. For Extreme weekends (the Grand Prix, CES, Super Bowl, New Year's Eve), book the flight the moment your dates are fixed; those weekends only get more expensive.

Why is my flight to Las Vegas so expensive this weekend?

Almost always one of three reasons: you are flying out Friday and back Sunday, which is the most expensive pattern on leisure routes; a major event is in town (a convention with 50,000 or more attendees, a title fight, the Grand Prix, a stadium weekend); or both at once. Do flight prices to Las Vegas drop at the last minute?

Rarely on weekends. Route data consistently shows last-minute Las Vegas fares running 25 to 50 percent above the route average. Airlines know Friday and Sunday demand is inelastic. The genuine last-minute bargains are midweek departures in the dead zones.

What is the cheapest day of the week to fly to Las Vegas?

Tuesday and Wednesday departures are the cheapest on most routes, and Monday beats Friday by roughly a quarter on several of them. Friday is the most expensive departure day almost everywhere; Sunday is the most expensive day to fly home.
