NBA Summer League Las Vegas: the fan's guide
By the ThingsVegas Editorial Team | Published October 24, 2026
Las Vegas does not have an NBA team. For 11 days every July, it has all of them. NBA Summer League brings all 30 franchises to two gyms on the UNLV campus, the Thomas and Mack Center and the Cox Pavilion next door, for 76 games built around the league's newest players: the draft class that was picked days earlier, plus young players fighting for roster spots. The 2026 edition ran July 9-19. It has become one of the great fan trips in American sports, and this guide explains how it works and how to plan around it. Part of our Las Vegas sports guide.
How the event works
- Everyone plays. All 30 teams come to Las Vegas (smaller warm-up leagues in California and Utah happen first, but Vegas is the main event). Each team plays at least five games.
- It ends with a real tournament. After each team's first four games, the top four advance to semifinals, and the winners meet in a championship game on the final Sunday.
- Games run all day. Tipoffs stack from around midday into the evening across both gyms, so a single day can hold half a dozen games.
- The crowd is the league. Coaches, executives, current stars, and retired legends sit in the same general admission sections as everyone else, because there is nowhere else to sit. That is the charm of the place.
Why fans travel for it
Summer League is the rare pro sports event where a normal fan can sit close enough to hear the bench, for the price of a modest dinner. You are watching the newest draft class play their first professional games, in a gym small enough that the number one selection might be warming up twenty feet from your seat. Fans plan annual trips around it the way golfers plan around a major: same week every July, same two gyms, and a Strip vacation wrapped around the basketball. It also tends to share the calendar with UFC International Fight Week, which makes mid-July one of the densest sports weeks of the Vegas year. Our guide to attending a UFC event covers the fight half of that week.
Tickets: the day pass is the whole trick
Summer League does not sell reserved seats the way the regular season does. Tickets are general admission day passes: one pass covers every game that day in both buildings, and you move freely between the Thomas and Mack Center and Cox Pavilion as the matchups rotate. Official sales run through NBAEvents.com and UNLVtickets. Strategy notes:
- Opening days are the marquee days. The first weekend, when the top draftees debut against each other, is the highest-demand stretch. Buy those day passes when they go on sale in the spring.
- Midweek days are the connoisseur days. Same format, thinner crowds, easier seats, and more basketball per dollar.
- Arrive for the matchup, not the day. With open seating, fans drift between gyms constantly. A seat that looks taken at noon is free by the next game.
- The big room has a second life. The Thomas and Mack Center is also where the National Finals Rodeo takes over every December; our NFR 2026 guide covers that transformation.
Getting there and surviving July
UNLV sits about 10 minutes east of the Strip. Rideshare is the default move; drivers should use the campus lots and follow event signage. There is no resort attached and no monorail station on campus, so build the short ride into your day rather than treating Summer League as a Strip attraction. And plan for the season: July afternoons in Las Vegas are the hottest of the year, so the rhythm that works is gym by day, pool and Strip by night. For evening viewing when you are not at the gyms, our guide to where to watch sports in Las Vegas covers the big-screen rooms.
