Zion National Park day trip from Las Vegas: fees, shuttle and permit rules

By the ThingsVegas Editorial Team | Published November 5, 2026 | Last reviewed: November 5, 2026

Zion works as a day trip if you leave Las Vegas before sunrise and accept a long day: about 160 miles and 3 hours each way. The decisions that shape the day are not scenic. They are the $35 entry, the shuttle calendar, and the Angels Landing lottery. This page settles all three.

What does the drive and the timing actually look like?

The route is Interstate 15 north to Utah 9 east, through St. George to Springdale, the town at Zion's south entrance: about 160 miles, 2.5 to 3 hours each way in normal conditions. Leave Las Vegas at 5 AM and you are parking in Springdale by 8. Leave at 9 AM and you have spent the best light in the car and the shuttle queues will be at their longest. The National Park Service counts more than 4 million visitors a year at Zion in recent counts, and the canyon funnels nearly all of them through one road and one shuttle line, which is why the early start is the whole strategy. Utah runs one hour ahead of Las Vegas, on Mountain Time, so a 5 AM Las Vegas departure is a 6 AM Utah start. Build that hour into every return calculation.

Zion entry calculator: pass or pay at the gate?

For one car on one trip. The 2026 nonresident surcharge is the number that changes the answer for international visitors.

People age 16 plus in the car:

  • Pay at the gate, this trip: $35
  • With the $80 America the Beautiful pass: $80 (then $0 at every federal fee site for a year)

Gate math: $35 per vehicle for US residents. Nonresidents add $100 per person age 16 plus unless an annual pass is held, per the National Park Service 2026 fee program. The calculator assumes the surcharge group and the counted group are the same people.

What are the 2026 entrance fees?

Entry2026 feeNotes
Private vehicle, 7 days$35Covers everyone in the car
Motorcycle, 7 days$30
Per person, on foot or bicycle$20Youth 15 and under free
America the Beautiful annual pass$80Covers the vehicle fee at every federal fee site for a year
Nonresident surcharge, from January 1, 2026Plus $100 per person, age 16 plusWaived only by holding an annual pass, per the National Park Service

Run the pass math honestly. A US resident visiting Zion alone pays $35 and the $80 pass only wins if a second park is on the same trip, which is exactly the case on the loop our day trips hub maps. A nonresident couple pays $35 plus $200 in surcharges at the gate, so for international visitors the annual pass is not a nice extra, it is the correct first purchase.

When does the shuttle run, and when can you drive the canyon yourself?

During shuttle season the free shuttle is the only way up Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, with 9 stops from the Visitor Center to the Temple of Sinawava, the Narrows trailhead. The 2026 season runs March 7 to November 28. A separate free Springdale town shuttle connects town parking to the park entrance, which matters because the Visitor Center lot fills early. The window Vegas visitors should circle is the quiet one: no shuttle runs November 29 to December 25, 2026, and in that window private vehicles may drive the Scenic Drive themselves. Holiday shuttle service returns December 26, 2026 to January 2, 2027. If you are reading this in November 2026, you have about three weeks of shuttle season left, then a month of drive in access that most guides never mention.

Angels Landing or the Narrows: what does each one demand?

Angels Landing is a lottery, not a queue. A permit is required year round for the chain section above Scouts Lookout, issued only on Recreation.gov: a seasonal advance lottery opens months ahead, and the day before lottery opens at 12:01 AM and closes at 3 PM Mountain Time the day before the hike, with results by 4 PM. Applying costs $6 per group of up to 6 people, and a selected permit costs $3 per person. On a Las Vegas day trip that means applying from your hotel room the day before, and having a plan B hike ready, because most applicants on peak dates do not get a permit. The Narrows asks for no permit at all for the day hike. Its gates are water level, temperature and gear: in late fall and winter the river is cold enough that the Springdale rental shops' dry gear is effectively required, and the park closes the hike when flows run high. Scouts Lookout, the viewpoint below the chains, needs no permit, and it is the honest plan B that still earns the drive.

Tour or self drive: which fits your day?

Self drive wins on cost and on the winter drive in window, and loses on the 6 hours of driving falling on one person's day. A guided day tour from Las Vegas removes the driving, bundles the park logistics, and costs more per person than the $35 car fee by a wide margin. Compare current departures on Viator's Las Vegas day trips page before you decide; if a Zion product is listed there with hotel pickup, that is the version that fits a no car trip. Staying over in Springdale instead converts the whole calculation: you get the canyon at opening time twice. There is no Expedia code on this site for Springdale properties, so we link no hotel booking here rather than send you through an untracked link. Sibling days from the same hub: Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend for the longest day, Red Rock Canyon for the closest one, and the Grand Canyon rim decision for the other big choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do Zion National Park as a day trip from Las Vegas?

Yes, as a long day with a sunrise start. Zion is about 160 miles from Las Vegas, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours each way via Interstate 15 and Utah 9 through St. George to Springdale. One canyon day works. Two days is the right call if Angels Landing or a full Narrows hike is the goal, because both reward an early start inside the park.

How much does Zion cost to enter in 2026?

$35 per vehicle for 7 days, $30 per motorcycle, or $20 per person on foot or by bicycle, per the National Park Service. The $80 America the Beautiful pass covers the vehicle fee. From January 1, 2026, non US residents age 16 and over pay an additional $100 per person at Zion unless they hold an annual pass. Youth 15 and under are free.

Do you need the shuttle at Zion, and when can you drive in yourself?

The free shuttle is mandatory on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive during shuttle season, which runs March 7 to November 28, 2026. There is no shuttle from November 29 to December 25, 2026, and in that window private vehicles may drive the Scenic Drive themselves. Holiday shuttle service returns December 26, 2026 to January 2, 2027.

How do Angels Landing permits work?

A permit is required year round for the chain section above Scouts Lookout, and permits are issued only by lottery on Recreation.gov. The application costs $6 per group of up to 6, and a selected permit costs $3 per person. The day before lottery opens at 12:01 AM and closes at 3 PM Mountain Time the day before your hike, with results by 4 PM.

Do you need a permit for the Narrows?

No. The Narrows day hike itself is permit free. What it needs is the right water conditions and, in cold months, rented gear in Springdale. Overnight backcountry trips are a different system and do need permits, which is one more reason the Narrows belongs on the two day version of this trip.

Should you add Bryce Canyon to this trip?

Bryce Canyon sits about 85 miles past Zion, and it works very differently: no timed entry, no mandatory shuttle, and a rim at 8,000 to 9,000 feet. It is too far from Las Vegas for a same-day round trip, so pair it with a Zion overnight or sleep at the gate. Our full guide covers the fees, the cashless rule, and where to base yourself: Bryce Canyon from Las Vegas: the overnight add-on.
