Grand Canyon: West Rim or South Rim? The decision page

By the ThingsVegas Editorial Team | Published November 5, 2026 | Last reviewed: November 5, 2026

Pick the West Rim for a one day trip and the Skywalk. Pick the South Rim for the classic canyon, the scale, and a per car price, and give it an overnight. They are different products run by different owners, 250 miles apart by road, and no ticket or pass works at both.

The five question rim chooser

Answer honestly. The tool counts your answers and names your rim.

1. Is the Skywalk a must do?

2. Do you have an overnight to give the canyon?

3. Do you hold a national park annual pass?

4. Is your own photography a priority?

5. Are you traveling as a group of 4 or more on a budget?

Answer the five questions and your rim appears here.

What does each rim cost a couple and a family of four?

The SkywalkHere, and only hereDoes not exist

The arithmetic is the argument. At the South Rim a family of four pays $35 for the car. At the West Rim the same family pays four per person passes. The West Rim is selling proximity and one unique structure, and for a visitor with exactly one day, that trade can be right. What is never right is buying the wrong West Rim pass: General Admission at $67 does not include the Skywalk, there is no standalone Skywalk ticket sold at the bridge, and visitors learn that at the entrance. Buy the All-Access Pass at $99 plus taxes and fees, or the Sunset Pass at $59 plus fees for entry after 3 PM, if the glass bridge is why you came.

What is the West Rim day actually like?

The site opens at 8 AM and the last ticket is sold at 4 PM Arizona time, which is 3 PM Las Vegas time in winter, a detail that catches late starters. Private cars park at the Welcome Center and a shuttle loop serves the viewpoints, including Eagle Point, where the Skywalk extends 70 feet beyond the rim, and Guano Point. On the Skywalk itself, no cameras or phones are allowed, free lockers are provided, and that rule is enforced, per Grand Canyon West. The All-Access Pass folds in a zipline ride, unlimited arcade play, and the $10 meal and $10 merchandise credits, which is why its honest comparison figure is the all in price, about $114 per person, not the $99 headline.

What is the South Rim day actually like?

Bigger in every dimension: deeper, wider, and layered in a way the West Rim viewpoints do not attempt. The South Rim is open year round, the $35 vehicle pass runs 7 days, and the rim trail lets photographers work at their own pace with their own cameras. The costs are time and, for international visitors in 2026, the surcharge. The National Park Service applies an additional $100 per person age 16 and over for non US residents at Grand Canyon from January 1, 2026, waived for annual pass holders. A nonresident family with two teenagers can therefore pay $435 at the South Rim gate against about $456 all in at the West for four All-Access Passes, which is why the old rule that the South is always cheaper now has an exception, and why the pass decision belongs at the top of an international visitor's planning. The North Rim, for the record, closes for winter, so it is not a November option at all.

Where do tours and bookings fit?

Our Grand Canyon tours page owns the tour listings, West Rim bus and helicopter days included, and this page owns only the decision. Guided days from Las Vegas are compared on Viator's Las Vegas day trips page. Check the current park alerts on the National Park Service site before any South Rim drive, because water, weather and trail conditions change the day. Two sibling decisions plug into this one: Zion in a day if your day is better spent in Utah, and Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend for the Page day. Williams, on the way to the South Rim, is also the Route 66 overnight in our Route 66 Arizona guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Grand Canyon West the same as the South Rim?

No, and the difference decides your day. Grand Canyon West is the Hualapai Tribe's attraction on tribal land, home of the Skywalk, about 130 miles and 2.5 hours from Las Vegas, charging per person. The South Rim is Grand Canyon National Park, run by the National Park Service, about 275 miles and 4.5 hours away, charging $35 per vehicle. A national park pass works at the South Rim and is worth nothing at the West.

How much does the Skywalk actually cost?

There is no standalone Skywalk ticket. The Skywalk is included in Grand Canyon West's All-Access Pass at $99 plus tribal taxes and fees, about $114 all in, which also includes the viewpoints, shuttle, a zipline ride, and $10 meal and $10 merchandise credits. The Sunset Pass at $59 plus fees, about $67.85 all in, includes the Skywalk for entry after 3 PM. General Admission at $67 does not include the Skywalk, which is the trap purchase this page exists to prevent.

What does the South Rim cost in 2026, including for international visitors?

$35 per private vehicle for 7 days, with America the Beautiful passes accepted, per the National Park Service. From January 1, 2026, non US residents pay an additional $100 per person age 16 and over at Grand Canyon National Park, unless they hold an annual pass. US residents are unaffected. That surcharge is why the international math on this page can flip toward the West Rim, which charges no surcharge.

Can you drive to the South Rim and back in one day?

You can, and most people should not. It is about 275 miles and 4.5 hours each way from Las Vegas, so the day is 9 hours of driving wrapped around a short canyon visit, and in winter you drive home in the dark. The South Rim rewards an overnight. The West Rim, at 2.5 hours each way, is the rim built for the one day window.

Can you take photos on the Skywalk?

No. No cameras or phones are allowed on the Skywalk itself. Free lockers are provided at the entrance, and the operator sells professional photos taken on the bridge. If your own photography is the point of the trip, that rule alone can decide it: the South Rim viewpoints have no such restriction.
