Las Vegas in 4 days: Strip days plus the full day trip

By the ThingsVegas Editorial Team | Published November 4, 2026 | Last reviewed: November 4, 2026

Four days is where a Las Vegas trip stops being a Strip weekend and becomes a Nevada trip. Days one to three follow the classic pattern: central Strip, show and dining, downtown. Day four is the full day trip the shorter plans skip: Valley of Fire, Red Rock, or the Grand Canyon West Rim.

What do days one to three look like?

They are the three day plan, unchanged: day one on the central Strip around the Bellagio Fountains, day two built around the best dinner and the headline show, day three downtown or a Hoover Dam half day. Do not compress them to make room for the day trip; the fourth day exists precisely so you do not have to. The itineraries hub lays the three lengths side by side.

Which day trip should day four be?

TripDrive from the StripThe dayBest for
Red Rock CanyonAbout 30 minutes, 17 miles west13 mile scenic loop, timed entry October to MayThe closest desert, an easier start time
Valley of FireAbout 1 hour, roughly 50 to 55 miles northeastRed sandstone, Fire Wave and White Domes; the park closes December 1 to 14 each year for maintenance, per Nevada State ParksThe strongest scenery per hour driven
Grand Canyon West RimAbout 2.5 hours, roughly 130 milesSkywalk and canyon viewpoints, per person entry pricingSeeing the canyon without an overnight
Grand Canyon South RimAbout 4.5 hours, roughly 275 milesThe national park rim, realistically an overnightNot a day trip; do not force it

Drive times and distances for Valley of Fire and the two rims were checked on November 4, 2026 against Nevada State Parks, the Hualapai Tribe's Grand Canyon West site and the National Park Service summaries in our research files. Tours remove the driving and the park entry logistics; the day trips hub prices them, and the car rental guide prices the do it yourself version.

How does day four run, hour by hour?

  • Early start. Desert light and tour pickups both favor morning. In winter this also buys you the full short day.
  • Back by evening, no plans. A leftovers night, a second show only if you still want one, and an early night before the flight.
  • Final morning. Checkout, a slow breakfast, and the ride back priced in the airport transport guide. Keep it empty on purpose.

The honest trade sits in one statistic: Valley of Fire is Nevada's oldest state park, established in 1935, and covers more than 40,000 acres of Aztec sandstone, per Nevada State Parks. An hour of driving buys that. It is the best value day in the four day plan for most first timers.

Stay central for the Strip days

The day trip starts from your hotel, so the base still matters:

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a fourth day add to a Las Vegas trip?

A full day trip, taken properly. The Grand Canyon West Rim, Valley of Fire and Red Rock Canyon each want a full day once drive time is counted. A fourth day also buys a slow final morning instead of a checkout sprint, which is why four days is the first length that never feels rushed.

Which day trip is best on a four day Las Vegas trip?

Valley of Fire for red rock scenery about an hour away, the Grand Canyon West Rim for the canyon itself at about two and a half hours each way, and Red Rock Canyon for the closest option at about 30 minutes. Hoover Dam is the half day version and fits day three instead. Our day trips hub compares tour prices and drive times.

Is the Grand Canyon South Rim a day trip from Las Vegas?

Not a sensible one. The South Rim is about 275 miles and roughly four and a half hours each way, per the National Park Service figures in our rim decision research, so a same day return means nine hours of driving for a few hours at the rim, in winter daylight less. Overnight it, or take the West Rim as the day trip.

When should you take the day trip, day three or day four?

Day four in this plan, with days one to three on the Strip and downtown first. If your anchor show falls late in the trip, swap them: the rule is that the day trip never sits the night before an early flight, because tour pickup times are early and desert days are tiring.

How much more does a four day trip cost than three days?

One more hotel night, one more food day, and the day trip itself, which is the only big optional line. Tours to Valley of Fire and the West Rim are priced on the day trips hub; a rental car day is priced in our car rental guide. Everything else in the plan reuses the three day cost model.
